Worldwide Incidence of COVID-19
Encoding
I chose to use a map, which is the obvious way to show people how bad it is right now. Many maps of the pandemic have been made, but I want to incorporate the best features from each and add some of my own to tell the most accurate story possible.
The world map encodes each country's confirmed cases and deaths for a particular date, shaded on a log scale.
The graphs below show the new daily cases (averaged over seven days) for each country.
Interactivity: How to use this visualization
- Move mouse over the graphs at the bottom to move the map's date forward or backwards.
- Hover over a country to see total confirmed cases and deaths on that day.
- Click on a country to highlight its curve in the graph.
Findings
- As of May 2020, it is obvious that the war against COVID-19 is not over. The total number COVID-19 cases worldwide is still increasing very fast and shifting to new hotspots.
- In countries that are currently doing the worst, such as Brazil, Russia, and the US, have done very little politically to respond to the pandemic. They appeared to have slow growth at the beginning only due to the fact there was little testing, and now they have no choice but to test more people and have their confirmed cases rise very quickly.
- In some of the worst-hit places the number of daily infections has peaked, while other countries that avoided the first waves are just beginning to tick up.
- A few areas such as Taiwan have done especially well at controlling the spread throughout the whole crisis. Some, like Singapore, kept numbers under control initially but had an outbreak later that forced it into a more aggressive lockdown. Others, like South Korea, saw one of the earliest major outbreaks (outside China) but have successfully controlled it since then.
- Given that we are also seeing second waves of cases, which means we should be err on the side of caution when reopening.
Peer Feedback
Feedback from Peers- The basemap of World is centered and is a reasonable size. The thickness of country wise boundary is good. The size of the symbols is a little big and they overlap too much. I would suggest to use a bubble to show the intensity of incidents per country.
- Details given about the coronavirus cases are helpful to understand . But the cases given are only per country rather than per location.
- Only one color is used to show the coronavirus cases.
- There's a good amount of data on the map but compared to the size of the svg, I wouldn't say that the data density is very high. The water of the map takes up half of the space.
- Maybe make map size smaller since the interactivity is main part that will showing my topic
- Made the text more legible
- Added more interactivity and richer data by allowing different dates to be selected
- Shrunk map to make room for plotting time-based cases for all countries below
