Do SF Fire Fighters Only Fight Fire?

Visualized using Tableau and D3.js

The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) provides fire and emergency medical services to the City and County of San Francisco, California. The San Francisco Fire Department, along with the San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco Sheriff's Department, serves an estimated population of 1.4 million people, which includes the approximately 850,000 citizens residing in the 47.5 square miles (123 km2) of San Francisco

What is the goal of this project?

We want to use a dataset about the San Francisco fire department to understand the quantity of 911 requests they manage and how these requests can be segregated into different categories. Firefighters are used for more than handling fires, which is what we'd like to bring some attention to through our visualizations.

Theme

We will be visualizing 3 multivariate plots as follows:

  1. No. of service calls by hour of day, by call type.
  2. No. of service calls handled by by hour of day, by different battalions.
  3. No. of service calls handled by different units.

Each of the above will contain number of values, 'call type' or 'call type group' respectively as a 3rd metric encoded by color.
